Noel Coward on Bali

Came across this piece of doggerel today and just have to share. The ‘Charlie’ is of course, Chaplin:

As I said this morning to Charlie,
There is far too much music in Bali.
And although as a place it’s entrancing,
There is also a thought too much dancing.
It appears that each Balinese native
From the womb to the tomb is creative,
And although the results are quite clever,
There is too much artistic endeavor.

Noel Coward

Fortunately for us all, the artistic endeavour remains as strong as it was in the 1930s, as witnessed by my previous post.

Ubud was an artistic salon in the ’30s and the rich and famous came to eat, pray and love. Some old footage of Charlie Chaplin’s trip, thanks to YouTube.
